Testimonials Wanted!!

Parents and Volunteers! I would love your help! On our website we have a spot for testimonials from camper's parents and volunteers about the benefits of therapeutic riding and the changes you see at TACO. I would love to be able to add some more testimonials to our page.

If you would like to contribute,  email me your testimonial at 4htaco@gmail.com. Below is the link to our site and you can read some of the testimonials we have added.

New Volunteer/Campers Applications

To help simplify paperwork we have created a new application system!
The purpose of this application is to gather information on volunteers or campers that are interested in volunteering or participating with TACO. We will keep your application on file and when we set dates for our specific camps we will contact you about it. We are also hoping this will allow us to recruit volunteers and campers year round, instead of only during "camp time."

Each volunteer/camper will still need to fill out a health history form, equine wavier, and standards of behavior form YEARLY; but this application will only need to be filled out every two-three years, as long as your information remains the same! The hope with this new application is to cut down on paperwork.

Once the date is set for the upcoming TACO camp, we will post the date on our Facebook page, website, and blog. We will also contact you by mail and email. You will receive a letter in the mail regarding the upcoming camp; you will only need to send a short slip back stating if you are able to attend or not! We will also have sign ups available through a Google document if you prefer to register online!  You will no longer need to fill out the 2 page application for every camp!

At this time, our volunteer interest application is ready, I just need to add reference forms, and I am still working on the camper interest application. ALL current campers/volunteers will need to complete these applications when they become available.

I would love any feedback you have on this new process.

Fall Day Entertainment

We had a fantastic entertainment for our 2013 Fall Day! Doug Edwards, Jeff Rankin, and Fred Wilson came to Elmwood with their quarter horses to give us a cattle working demonstration. Doug lost his arm as a young child in farming accident, as you can see in the video below- his horse is use to everything being done by Doug with only one arm! Jeff has Cerebral Palsy. He started riding and is now working cattle, he went thorough a number of horses to find the right one for him. These three gentleman put a lot of work into coming to Elmwood for our campers; including bringing 3 cows and 4 horses over! It was a delight watching them work and being able to ride with them. We look forward to many more events with them in the future.

TACO Fall Fundraisers

Below is information regarding 3 fundraisers TACO will be hosting this Fall!

The first item we are offering are hooded sweatshirts. They can be ordered in pink, blue, or grey. The sweatshirts will have TACO's logo screen printed on the front pocket (like our t-shirts) with a full sized logo on the back. The sweatshirts will be $25 for sizes small through extra-large and $28 for 2XL. We are offering the sweatshirts for only $1.00 more than our cost. We would like for this to be something for our campers and parents to wear to raise community awareness about TACO. Orders will be due by November 8, with delivery by the end of November. These would make great Christmas presents!

The second item we have available is through Virginia Pewtersmith. They offer pewter key chains and Christmas ornaments that are approximately 2 and a half inches in size. Each key chain or ornament has an imprint of TACO’s logo. These are great items and the company is very easy to work with. The key chains and ornaments are available for $10 each! These orders will be due by November 8, with delivery by the end of November. They would also make a great Christmas present!

Every year the 4H organizes a poinsettia sale for all of their clubs. This year TACO will be participating. The poinsettias are $7.00 for 6 inch pots and $13.00 for 8 inch pots. Orders are due by November 21, and will need to be picked up December 4 from 4-6:30 pm or December 5 from 8-5pm at the Orange Extension Office.

All orders must be prepaid for. Checks should be made payable to "Treasurer of Virginia Tech" with "Orange County" in the memo line. There is a $35 return check fee.

Order forms will be sent to campers via mail and will be available at the Orange County Extension Office or by email.

Order forms will be sent to campers by mail this coming week. Also, below is a copy of the letter that will accompany the order forms.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING FALL DAY!

Attention Fall Camp Volunteers and Campers!!!

Due to the weather forecast for Friday, we are working to prepare in case we need to cancel our Fall Day! We will NOT cancel for small rain showers/sprinkles, but we will need to cancel if there is heavy rain! We obviously hope that we will not need to, but we would like to be prepared just in case!

We will make a decision based on the weather no later than 1 pm on FRIDAY! In the event of cancellation, we need to be able to notify our volunteers and campers!

There are a few ways I can notify you and I would appreciate your help!

1st option: Sign up for Remind101 text messages. To sign up for Remind101 (it is completely free!) Send a text message to 571-414-0091 and enter the code @f5233 in the message of the text. You will be prompted with a text message to enter your name and confirm your subscription.

I will be using this service for all TACO Events, including reminders about camps, events, deadlines, and weather related changes! So, it would be very helpful if as many people as possible can sign up for it!

2nd option: E-mail

3rd Option: Phone call

4th option: Facebook

Please email me at 4HTACO@gmail.com which option you would prefer to be notified by in case of a weather related cancellation on Friday. Also, please make sure that we have your correct email or phone number on file if that is the option you would like.

Thank you for your help and I hope the rain holds off for us on Friday!

These gentleman have graciously accepted our invitation to join us and are very excited to be included.

We are thrilled to be hosting this demonstration and would love for parents to join us for this event!! The demonstration will begin at approximately 5pm.

Thank you!!

A huge thank you to all of our volunteers, campers, parents and everyone else who made TACO possible this year!

We had a great week and wonderful weather! Especially to be able to have the horse show outside- which I thought was much more enjoyable

I am working on going through the pictures! However there are almost 4,000 pictures!

Please watch our Facebook for photos from camp! I will also be posting a description of the awards the campers received at the horse show shortly!

Pizza Party Apology

I would like to apologize to everyone for the lack of pizza at our carnival on Friday! Unfortunately we placed the pizza order with Mario's Monday afternoon and they misplaced it. By the time we realized their mistake on Friday it was too late to have the pizza delivered in time.

Thursday's Camp

Wednesday evening we were a little unsure if we'd be here on Thursday or not! But thankfully mother nature cooperated with us and we were able to hold camp today!

We were running a little late and had to take a few breaks first thing this morning due to some rain showers but we were still up and running!!

The campers got to play another game of I Spy, work on their trotting some more, and of course practice for their horse show tomorrow!

In arts and crafts campers got to decorate their pillow cases, make lava lamps (these are really cool!!) and finish putting their "Ocean in a Jar" together.

However, even as fun as riding and arts and crafts are, I think the highlight of their day was horse education! They got to paint a Rocky! They were able to learn about the horses body parts by putting their hand print with paint on areas of his body, identifying what part they were painting! I think Rocky enjoyed the attention as much as the campers enjoyed painting him!

For entertainment Waugh's Motorcycles came out and gave rides in the side car and also Mike Simmons and PJ gave a Natural Horsemanship Demonstration! The campers loved both!!

We'd also like to thank Stephanie Satchell from CBS 19 for coming out and doing a piece on TACO. You can see the video along with the article at the following link: http://www.newsplex.com/home/headlines/Orange-Co-Camp-Using-Horses-to-Help-Kids-with-Special-Needs-217951521.html?device=phone

Don't forget our horse show tomorrow from 8:45 to 10:30 in addition to our carnival and pizza party afterwards!! We are looking forward to being in the outdoor ring for the show tomorrow! We hope that all of our parents, supporters, and volunteers can attend the horse show so the campers can show off what they have learned this week!

Fund Raising.. Items available for purchase at TACO's Horse Show

Just to let everyone know tomorrow at TACO's horse show we will have 2012 t-shirts available for purchase for $15, 5x7 engraved photo frames with a group picture from 2013 for $20 and TACO's water bottles available to order for $12.

We have a few picture frames available that can be purchased and taken home tomorrow and we can also take orders for additional picture frames.

TACO's Horse Show Information

The horse show will start around 8:45 tomorrow (Friday) morning and run until 10:30. Each group will ride back to back.

Please come out and support our campers so they can show off all of the hard work they have done this week!

Wednesday Camp

Everyone has fallen into a good routine now! The campers enjoyed a good game of Simon Says and I Spy while riding today and of course trotting!

In arts and crafts the campers painted boot planters, painted sea shell jars to make an "Ocean in a Jar," signed pillow cases as thank you gifts for the horse owners and painted a few more sea shells!

They learned about different disciplines and types of tack in horse education along with how to tack up a horse! As always, they had to spend some time grooming on Cody!

The Orange Volunteer Fire Department came today and the campers were able to try on turn out gear, spray water, and learn about different pieces of equipment they carry.

Preparation for Rain *VOLUNTEERS AND CAMPERS**

Parents and volunteers-- they are calling for a 60% chance of rain tomorrow, all day. At this time TACO is STILL ON FOR TOMORROW!!!

We will not cancel if it is a light rain or drizzle! However, if it is storming or torrential downpour in the morning we will have to cancel camp. We plan to make the decision by 7am.

If you do not hear from us in the morning, camp is still on!!

We will be contacting all volunteers and campers in the morning if camp is cancelled, and I will be posted it on our Facebook page and blog. If you are someone that is able to check our Facebook page in the morning to see about the status of camp, please let me know so I can take you off of the call list!

CAMPERS AND VOLUNTEERS!!! WEDNESDAY'S ATTIRE!!!

CAMPERS AND VOLUNTEERS!! Tomorrow (Wednesday) we will be taking a group photo! If you have a camp shirt from last year or previous years please wear your camp shirt on Wednesday!!!

If you do not have a camp shirt our color last year was light blue if you have a light blue shirt you'd like to wear!

Tuesday Camp!

We had another great day today!!

Grey Ghost was back at camp and everything was "back to normal" as far as horses go! Everyone enjoyed seeing him back, as he is always a familiar face at camp!

The campers got to enjoy practicing trotting for the first time since spring camp! They all did FANTASTIC!

In arts and crafts the campers made stepping stones with horse shoes pressed into them and other decorations and made bubble snakes!

In horse education campers learned about the different breeds and colors of horses. They were able to match their camp horses with their breeds and color!

For entertainment we had the Orange County Sheriffs Office SWAT Team! A special thank you for coming out and explaining to the campers about the SWAT team, showing them their equipment and police cars, and especially for the driving demonstration they provided.

I will be adding photos from Tuesday to this post this weekend!

Monday Camp Update!

Our first day of camp went great!! So great, I almost forgot it was Monday

The horses were on their best behavior! New and returning campers were glad to be in the saddle! We are very thankful to Renee Bourke for stepping in with a pony at the last minute to take Grey Ghost's place today since he was out with a small injury. We are looking forward to Grey Ghost returning tomorrow, he was missed today! And of course we are all looking forward to our new and returning horses to ride!

The campers got to make invitations to the horse show for their parents, write thank you cards for the entertainment for the week, and also paint river rocks. Some even got to paint some sun catchers!

Campers also learned about horse and barn safety and were able to do some horse grooming!

At the end of the day, the campers enjoyed rides in a wagon pulled by draft horses and also Sully came and visited with some of his wonderful stories!

"Outside" Craft Items needed for Summer Camp

This year, campers will be doing a "nature painting" craft at camp. The craft will take place the first day of camp (July 29). We are in need of smooth light colored river rocks or stones and any flower blooms.

The link to the craft is below so you can get an idea of the materials we need and what we will be doing.

If you have any smooth river rocks or stones (about the size of an adult  hand or a little larger) or flower blooms that TACO could use it would be greatly appreciated.

We also could use seashells (of any sizes) for another craft!

You can contact me at 4htaco@gmail.com if you have any of these items.

TACO Fun Show---Carol Angle and Tigger

We had a very special feature presentation at TACO’s Fun Show at Elmwood Farm on Saturday!

The Century Club was established at The Dressage Foundation in 1996, at the suggestion of Dr. Max Gahwyler, noted dressage judge and clinician. The purpose of The Century Club is to honor senior dressage riders and horses that are still actively riding and competing. In order to become a member of The Century Club, the ages of the rider and horse must add up to 100 or more years! The team must also ride any level dressage test at a show, and be scored by a judge.

We are very pleased that Carol Angle rode to join this very special club, represented by over 125 members from across the country. Carol rode Tigger Saturday to become only the third Century Club Team from Virginia!

Tigger is a 15 year old Warm blood cross by a Dutch Warm blood stallion, “Pirate” out of a thoroughbred mare. Tigger was bred and raised by Stacey Donnelly owner of Talesend Farm in Somerset, Virginia. Carol purchased

Tigger from Stacey when he was seven years old. Carol and Tigger are in training with Robin Wood.

We had a special presenter of the award, as Stacey Donnelly; Tigger’s breeder was there to present Carol her Century Club award!

On behalf of The Dressage Foundation and TACO, Way to go Carol and Tigger!
